The Bachian Swing Consort reimagines the music of J.S. Bach as a living framework for improvisation, groove, and creative exchange. Rooted in both historically informed performance and modern improvising traditions, the ensemble combines bold new arrangements of Bach’s works with moments of free group improvisation—bridging Baroque structure and contemporary freedom. Filmed live in Austin over two nights in January 2024, The Bachian Swing Consort captures this unique blend of historical depth, rhythmic vitality, and spontaneous invention.
Stages of Sonder
The recorded composition that accompanied my graduate thesis
This recording (and accompanying paper) is a large scale personal artistic and academic achievement. Every instrument in Stages of Sonder was performed by myself—with the exception of the cello lead in movement 2 & and cello doubling in movement 3 (both played by Maggie Chafee). Also, all lyrics were written by me and all music was composed, recorded, edited, and mixed by myself in my studio in Nashville, Tennessee.
Although there are five clearly defined movements in Stages of Sonder, the entire 28-minute piece is ideally intended to be listened to in one sitting, as you would a symphony. It is, in essence, somewhat of a “concept album,” or one that is tied together by a unifying narrative theme. In this case, my narrative deals with the concept of “sonder,” a word defined by John Koenig as follows:
n. the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.
I explore this concept through a first-person narrated experience of “sonder” related to the phenomenon, The Five Stages of Grief: Denial, Depression, Anger, Bargaining, and Acceptance.

I cannot emphasize enough how great it was to work with Aaron.
His organization and planning is unmatched, creating an efficient process for exercising creativity. If you work with Aaron, all of the unforeseen project barriers will be identified and preemptive solutions will be presented.
In addition to his ability to lead the project in studio and in production, his compositional knowledge is unparalleled. Aaron helped bring our songs to life with wonderful string quartet arrangements, as well as thoughtful notes on song and lyric structure.
I contacted Aaron for a professional, high quality product and I would encourage any level of musical artist to do the same.

Aaron’s expertise in maximizing both efficient use of studio time and creative experimentation was very helpful as I was afraid that those things would be in tension with one another. I experienced him as both a disciplined professional and a curious, enthusiastic musician.
He was willing to do everything from facilitate creative decisions about harmony and timbre to make sure we ate lunch.
Aaron also wrote the string parts for the record that included a long instrumental interlude where the strings, playing without the rest of the band, captured the mood of the record and the melancholy of the lyrical themes. It is a highlight of the record in my opinion. I would highly recommend Aaron's expertise, professionalism, musicianship, and general attitude.
